So I finally figure out how to get my hair done up Edwardian-period like. Guess what? My hair is too thin. Since we moved to NC, my hair has been massively falling out. I went from having "the thickest hair" my hairdressers had ever seen (no joke) to now having probably 1/4 of that. It falls out in clumps. My hair was just too thin to make the pompadour in the front.

Does anyone know what to do about hair falling out or making it look thicker?

I use to be a very loyal Rococco/18th century costumer. But lately I have found myself utterly intrigued with tudor and victorian clothing. I have always "liked" them. But now they are really growing on me. My huge list of dresses I must have has quadrupled.

How does everyone do their period hair? Without hair pieces, if possible. I don't have the money for hairpieces. I am talking not only style, but hair care. Obviously way back when, people didn't wash their hair everyday with Pantene and blow dry it. Any good resources for period haircare?

Here are some examples (the b&w photos are distant relations or unrelated from Owsley Co. KY historical society):

Ok, I just gotta say this lady is my hero.
How exceedingly general:

http://womenshistory.about.com/library/quiz/bltqueenquiz.htm

Which Tudor Queen Are You? - Quiz

Fun with women's history

You are: part Queen Elizabeth I, part Mary, Queen of Scots, part Catherine of Aragon

Queen Elizabeth I of England, the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. Henry had Anne executed, after dissolving their marriage, charging her with infidelity (and more). Elizabeth ruled in her own right, after the death of her sister, Mary. Her motto was "Always the Same."

Mary, Queen of Scots, was first betrothed to the Dauphin of France, who died shortly after their marriage and his ascension to the throne. She returned to Scotland, where her mother had been regent for her, and assumed the throne. But her short reign was troubled: Catholics versus Protestants struggling for the throne, and a pretty messy love life: her second husband was murdered, and then she was kidnapped by and married the man widely blamed for the murder. Mary was a cousin of Elizabeth, and assumed by many to be next in line for the crown. Thus, she was a threat to Queen Elizabeth, who eventually had her executed. Mary's motto was "In My End Is My Beginning."

The picture depicts a fictional meeting between the two cousins, who never actually met face-to-face in real life.

Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of Queen Isabella I of Spain and her husband and co-ruler, King Ferdinand. Promised in marriage to the heir to the Tudor throne, prince Arthur, she married Arthur's brother Henry after Arthur died. Her failure to have sons meant Henry looked elsewhere for a wife. He broke from the Church of Rome in order to end his marriage to Catherine, who continued her own devotion to Catholicism and passed that commitment on to her daughter, the future Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary"). Her motto was "Humble and Loyal."

Catherine de Medici
You scored 59% on ruling power!

You are: Catherine de Medici, Queen of France, 1519-1589. Catherine de Medici was a born into the influential Medici family of Florence, Italy. In 1533 she was given in a political marriage to Henri, Duke of Orleans, who became the French King in 1547. As queen she was very influential in bringing aspects of Italian culture to France, such as their theater and food. After her husband's death, she gained political power as regent for her sons (she had ten children). An ambitious woman, she actively involved herself in the political intrigues of the court, always trying to increase royal power. At first Catherine tried to reconcile France's opposing Catholic and Protestant factions as their violent disputes threatened national unity. But with the massacre in 1570 of Protestants (the massacre of St Bartholomew), this peace was shattered, and Catherine was blamed for allowing it to happen.

In other news, I realized that we had a University Library in town that I could actually go to!!! The town library is better than in our old town, but still woefully understocked. I can not check things out (no NC drivers license), and I don't have a Piratecard thing, so I can't make copies. I am going to have to find a way around this...

But I found almost EVERY single costume and pattern book on my wish list!!!! I have spend an hour on Saturday and an hour on Sunday going through them all. I don't have a parking pass, so I have to use the meter which only runs for an hour, so I have to do this in spurts.

I am SOOOO excited. Most of them are in the creepy remodeling wing with plastic on the bookshelves and what looks like blacklights, so I get kinda freaked being back there long, but I am going to go back tomorrow maybe and see about making a couple copies or at least looking over a few books again.

Unfortunately, they do not have Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 1660-1860.

So I am now trying to decide what to get myself for xmas. I really don't have any money, but I am going to splurge on the credit card. I can sew, though I get ADD on the machine, so this will all be done by hand. I used to make dresses all the time when I was a kid. And my grandma's a quilter who taught me a lot, so I can do this!!!

I have decided I like the Robe à l'Anglaise from J.P. Ryan. And I will need the stays pattern. My 5.5 yo is obsessed with Felicity from American Girls, and wants her blue gown from her Felicity's Surprise book. I think that this Small Girls 18th Century Gown http://rockinghorse-farm.com/tab2/store/category/8n23/Childrens.html would be decent. The size is 3-6 and she is more of a 6, and I am wondering why they don't have an in between size (the next largest is 8-14).

So maybe I should keep looking around for a better one for her. http://www.longago.com/colonialchildren.html has one New France, 18th century New France Girls pattern. It isn't exactly what she wanted, though.

This is what she wants:

I am way too motivated to do about 300 dresses that I am currently obsessed with.

So now I should order those and decide on fabrics...I suppose since I don't know exactly everything I will need that I should wait until I actually get the patterns before I order stuff.

I have been so busy reading everyone else's blog that I have neglected my own!

My SIL and her boyfriend and 2 yo came down for Thanksgiving. Which wasn't too bad. Much better than expected. I do have a couple of things that I need to get off my chest, though.

1. Just because your child is screaming doesn't mean it was my kid's fault. She took the toy from my son and was mad because he didn't want her to.

2. Don't waste so much friggin food! You don't need a whole plate of food if you don't plan on eating and are just going to trash it.

3. I can NOT stand pickiness. Maybe it was from being hungry so much in my life and not having the money for food. But just don't be so picky around me or at least don't say you want it and then pick around it, wasting it.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Basically I should have just said screw Thanksgiving and gotten McDonalds and they would have been happier.

Ganked from cariad2 who ganked this from ciroccoj, etc...:

1. Elaborate on your default icon.
Bouguereau's "The Young Shepherdess". It is my favorite painting. It is dark and lonely and reminds me of me. I hate me, but I like this painting. We look a lot alike and she is a shepherdess. I like sheep and wish I were a shepherdess.

2. What's your current relationship status?
Married one year. Been together for longer.

3. Ever have a near-death experience?
Yes, actually. Long story short, I almost drowned in a murky lake whilst walking out to my grandpa's boat to go for a ride. I was pregnant and holding my 6 month old dd. She was a bowling ball of a child and I plummeted down in the water and had to hold her up out of the water above my head while gulping water into my lungs and blacking out before someone noticed. I obviously lived and am now terribly frightened of getting into any depth of water deeper than my bath tub.

4. Name an obvious quality you have?
Pointy and upturned english nose. Deep blue green eyes that are a definite unique characteristic. Or so I am told.

5. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
I just forgot...Usually children's songs like Alouette.

6. Any celeb you would marry?
No. I don't like public life. And I am sure that most celebrities aren't very faithful, or so I hear. If I were drunk, I might marry Angelina Jolie or Joaquin Phoenix. But I bet they'd say no.

7. Who will cut and paste this first?
Noone loves me.

8. Name someone with the same birthday as you.
Macauley Caulkin. Or more importantly, a woman in my playgroup/pagan group's son.

9. Do you have a crush on someone?
Not that I can think of.

10. Have you ever vandalized someone's private property?
I was a raucous teen, I am sure I did either purposefully or inadvertently. But not that I can remember.

11. Have you ever been in a fight?
Plenty. My favorite one was when I stood up for my friend who is hearing impaired in 7th grade. The girl came up and started talking smack to me the next day with no prompting. I told her her mouth was blue and asked what she was doing over there with smurfs. She punched me in the face. Luckily, me being a wussy, my friend I backed up was a very strong, very fierce athlete and came and beat her ass before I could even hit the girl back. Everyone denied seeing her hit anyone and she got off free.

12. Have you ever sung in front of a large audience?
Not for real. Stupid school things where we had to I would mouth the words.

13. What's the first thing you notice about the OPPOSITE sex?
??? I don't know. Nose, maybe?

14. What do you usually order from Starbucks?
Never been in one.

15. Have you ever hurt yourself on purpose?
Why, surely.

16. Say something totally random about yourself.
I was born in the wrong century. I also have SAD, and OCD.

17. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity?
No.

18. Do you wear a watch? What kind?
Not for many a year.

19. Do you have anything pierced?
Ears and belly button.

20. Do you have any tattoos?
Soon, hopefully.

21. Do you like pain?
It depends on the situation.

22. Do you like to shop?
Not unless it's for yarn. I have SAD, so I hate to go into stores.

23. What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
Holy smokes, I have no idea.

24. What was the last thing you paid for with a credit card?
Groceries.

25. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
My brother.

26. What is on your desktop background?
It changes constantly. A picture of the whomping willow from POA.

27. What is the background on your cell phone?
A picture of my dd misbehaving.

28. Do you like redheads?
Redheadedness (dark auburn, at least) runs in my family, and my oldest dd is a redhead.

29. Do you know any twins?
My best friend has a set of fraternal boy twins.

30. Do you have any weird relatives?
Of course. How weird are we talking, because I have only two who are semi-normal.

31. What was the last movie you watched?
GOF.

32. What was the last book you read?
Marion Zimmer Bradley's Witch Hill. It was horrible. Now I am reading Robert Fulghum's Uh Oh for the umpteenth time because I don't want anything depressing right now.

33. Did you or are you planning to go to college?
I have over 100 credit hours and still no prospect of a degree. I was torn between pre med and pre nursing for awhile. And philosophy. And political science. And geology. And archaeology. And special education. Hopefully, one of these days I will get my nursing degree so I can get a job.

34. What is your favorite pair of pants that you own?
My Gap sweat pant capri things. They were on sale and they are stylish and the most comfortable pants ever made.

35. Do you like to party?
Nope.

36. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Pretty close to where I am now. HOPEFULLY with a degree done, part time job, homeschooling my children in Northern Maine with a small wool sheep farm and a grove of mcintosh apple trees and a pumpkin field. But that's not going to happen.

Living dairy free

When dd Pumpkin was born, she had some issues. Lots of rashes, respiratory infections, colic, diarrhea. You name it... Once we started the elimination diet (which I decided to do on my own since my doc was no help), things started to look up. After a very stressful few weeks, we realized that dairy was the culprit. It used to be that eating something with very little dairy in it would only have mild symptoms for her. She would get the colic and a bit of a rash. Well, over the last 20 months they have become more severe. The allergist was more help, since the testing didn't work right, and they inadvertently rubbed whey into her open sore. She has also been having yeast issues over the past 2 months. This is new. A new lacey rash.

So we cut out gluten. And 99% of sugar. BOY did it suck. I LIVE off of bread and desserts. I don't eat meat (ethical and taste reasons), so I was quite narrowed in food selection, as dd is bf. So I have decided to track our problems/diet/issues on here so that anyone else with these issues may benefit from it.

Breakfast: Whole wheat blueberry muffin from some organic mix. Dairy free. Smothered in earth balance. Glass of orange juice. DD had full circle organic honey nut toasted o's with silk enriched soy milk.

Lunch: Irish Stew: evoo, parsnips, carrots, onion, garlic, potato, rosemary, thyme, parsley, canned red kidney beans, peas, celery, s&p. Saute until all tender (or nearly). Then add three cups of water or until just covered and cook 30 minutes. Add a cup of water with 2 tbs. cornstarch to thicken.
Molasses bread: 2 c.whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup ap flour, 3 oz. canola oil, 3 oz. molasses, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. each baking powder and soda, 1/4 c. ground flax seeds, 1 1/2 c. silk enriched with 1 tsp. acv. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Serve smothered in earth balance.

Pumpkin's rash is almost gone. She has been eating lots of peach soy yogurt, or acidophilus mixed in with her "ice ice" (ice cream) as a treat at night. Also, 1/2 tsp. (or whatever goes down) of clarinex a night. Vitamin C 500 mg, or "candy" as we call it, as well. We have been using some nystatin prescription cream on her butt when the rash comes back. It stays for a little under a week, goes away for a day or two, and has been coming back and repeating lately. Very yeasty looking, sometimes open and bleeding. Lacey rash up the back and legs and stomach occasionally. It has not been nearly as bad as before we started this regime a few weeks ago. No hives really seen lately.

I need a shrink

Yesterday I got a phone call from my aunt. My grandmother is getting married (again). It will be in September back up in Ohio. I REALLY wish I could go. But we are so broke. We don't have a penny to spare. I feel miserable. Early this past May, I found out where my "real" father may be living, and managed to trap my grandpa at this family camping thing so that I could finally see him. But I couldn't get the money together to go.

I hate this feeling. Like a huge swelling lump in my throat that I can't swallow. Yes, I am an emotional bottler. I can't help it. I have had depression, OCD and SAD since I was a child. I tried going on zoloft for awhile when I was pregnant with pumpkin, but quit when she was born. Things were okay for awhile, but they have been getting progressively worse in the past 3 months or so. I am isolated here. I miss my brothers so badly. I pretty much raised them all since they were born. And I am so lost without them. They are much younger than me and being raised by my step father right now. He does great with them, but I feel so worthless out here and I feel like I abandoned them. I am not there for them. Their "nanny" is a cute blond thing younger than me that takes care of them. Talk about making me feel inadequate. Especially when dh would rather look up pictures of cute little big boobed blondes than even talk to me.

I know this all relates to my mother. My stepdad is a psychologist for crying out loud. I was raised with this talk. Nothing like a beautiful vain mother who was always too preoccupied with herself to even notice you. Or when she did, you'd rather she ignored you. She is currently in rehab awaiting 8-90 years or something for her upteenth drug charge in the past 5 years. I was never really close to my mother to begin with. Sometimes I feel like I need to try to talk to her (I have been disowned by her for several years) but then I remember what she put my brothers through and it makes me sick. I can forgive her treatment of me, but not my brothers. They are scarred from her evilness. I should be there to be their "mother", but instead I am all the way out here.

Not to mention dh complaining day in and day out about his job and about how I need to get a job. I know this. Does he think that I sit around and eat bon bons all day throwing his money out to the gardeners (no, I do not have a "gardener", I live in a duplex area that is maintained by the landlords). I have applied for about two dozen jobs. I am overqualified for menial jobs even at petsmart or Lowe's. But my healthcare qualifications and such do not transfer from IL, so I can not get a job that I am qualified for without taking 4 months of school for which I can not find daycare or funding for daycare.

And dh is the reason we moved here. Yes, I was desperately looking for jobs for dh and applied for many on behalf of him, but I did not want to move here and made it clear. At least it wasn't IL, but now I miss it. There were no evil fire ants. No violent crime. I had family. At least we have health insurance now, but we can't afford the copays to use it. And of course he blames our being here on me. Even though I told him not to say yes to the job. But, of course, everything is my fault. Right???

So we have been homeschooling preschool/kindergarten for about a year now. Fun times. Really, it would be if my two oldest didn't bicker like an old married couple. They REALLY need time away from each other.

This week we are talking about fairies. As well as for the next few weeks. I like fairies. They make me all happy inside like a little girl. We have not gotten much done lately, however. Between our 10 week old lab/border collie puppy who loves to pee and poop on the floor, and Pumpkin who is just the world's craziest child, we don't get much done.

Once we dragged out of bed and cleaned up puppy poo,I ate breakfast while the little ones watched sesame street and ate cereal. It is a glorious time of the day when they are all entranced by the television and not being demanding. But that quickly ends. So we went on to circle time. We light our candles-which means that my children try to light themselves on fire, then we move on to singing a little verse, talking about what we are doing for the day, maybe read a poem or sing a story, then say our closing verse and blow out our candles. Which means that Pumpkin nurses the whole time. Militantly. I feel like a prisoner of war (no offense). She is quite a demanding child who will someday make a good drill seargent.

Then we filled up our dry birdfeeder and hung it up outside. After doing the first lesson in Teach your children to read in 100 lessons while the younger two colored, we started making lunch! Yay, glorious food! We finally broke down and used our newly paid off credit card so that we could eat. It sucks being poor. I honestly don't know what i'd do, though, if I had money to throw around. Anywho, we made Irish Stew (no meat, kidney beans instead), mashed Yukon gold potatoes, and some molasses bread. I gorged myself. It was great.

Of course we watched the end of Between the Lions and Reading Rainbow during lunch. What can I say? I like educational tv. I know my kids (and I) watch too much, but there are worse things to be worried about. I certainly don't let them watch what I consider to be trash. Which is odd because I am quite liberal, yet very conservative about what should be on tv and in access to our children. Bratz dolls? Mini prostitutes if you ask me. Same with almost every sex selling commercial out there. I feel like a puritan. lol. Sex isn't evil, it should just be taught in more appropriate, self respecting ways than the is shown on tv. I don't consider "girls gone wild" as anything even nearing on healthy.

I think that kink and such has a different place. Away from kids.

Off my soap box now. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, right?

So day, what, 4 or 5 of wheat free. I haven't been an angel, but I have cut out 99% of the sugar, yeast, and gluten.

The doctor yesterday agrees with me. He was awesome. He says that dd is most definitely allergic to milk, he was very pro-me breastfeeding. He has put dd on Clarinex, nystatin cream, and absoultely no dairy (of course). So he is curious to see if this treatment for a couple of weeks will help her out. If it isn't 100% better without the dairy and on the meds, we will do some blood work for other allergies. She has had her rashes (yeast and hives) for almost two months now, and the poor girl needs a break. Plus she is on acidophilus, and I forgot to mention the wheat and yeast free diet, but that shouldn't matter, as it will help the yeast die off and we will try it back in a couple of weeks.

But the gluten free thing is KILLING me. And meat sounds really good. Which I know is because I haven't really been full with the diet restrictions and I am just craving something filling, like ribs, or like 5 corn dogs. But I have been ODing on chili chips (veggie, no jalapenos, no olives, no cheese or sour cream) from McAlister's, so it's all good.

Oh crap. I gotta wake dd up (she just passed out) and feed her her acidophilus. That sucks. I will wait till right before I go to bed. Which is hopefully soon. If I can fall asleep...

For dinner we had baked beans (sugar and vinegar, I know), home fries (ketchup, I know), and veggie shish ka bobs. Yum yum. And we made a gluten and dairy free chocolate cake. Some gluten free mix Cherrybrook, I believe, and then we made frosting with almond, vanilla, and butter flavorings plus 1/2 cup Spectrum shortening, 1/4 cup carob powder and 3 cups of powdered sugar and 1/4 cup soymilk. It was a bit too flavorful and oddly tasted of orange, but oh well. It is pretty good, way too sugary, and I don't think that I will be eating much more. **Gasp**! Am I not craving sugar as much going off of it?

Wow I am on here a lot today!

So I finally picked up another copy of Scottish Witchcraft and Magick again. I lost my old one when we moved many moons ago. It is such a good book. I forgot how great it is about talking about the Picts' beliefs and about attachment to nature. I still have a few more books I would like to acquire and read through, but I'm waiting for the moulah to do so.

We went for a walk after dinner and the kids wanted to pick up some trash along side our heavily littered little road we walk on. I was helping pick up some styrofoam from a bush and a bunch of stupid ants swarmed my foot (and shoe!)and started biting me. I HATE ANTS. You know, back in IL they were nice, and I would politely stay out of their way and avoid stepping on them, but here in NC they are EVIL. They are everywhere and attack us everytime we go outside and have been attacking our puppy. It's like a bad sci-fi movie!

We had a quinoa/red lentil magic loaf thanks to help from http://www.veganlunchbox.com/loaf_studio.html. It was good! We can't have ketchup (vinegar), so I just used tomato sauce, but it was yummy! We also had roasted sweet potatoes on the side, but they weren't cooked quite through. :(

And for some reason every time I eat these gluten free brownies, my belly hurts, so I need to go find a good cake recipe!
